本展は愛知県立芸術大学が国際交流事業として招聘するNY在住の彫刻家・家具作家のクリストファー・カーツ氏との交流展です。カーツ氏は、米国カンザスシティ・アートインステトゥートで彫刻を2年間学んだ後、NY州アルフレッド大学アート&デザイン学部へ転校し、同大学を1998年に卒業。同年ハーバード大学大学院建築科(GSD)キャリアディスカバリプログラムでランドスケープ・アーキテクチャーを学び、卒業後は世界的に著名な彫刻家であるマーティン・パーイヤーのアシスタントを5年間務めました。2005年に独立し、彫刻と家具の制作を開始。2005年にLouis Comfort Tiffany Award、2007年にNew York Foundation For the Arts (NYFA) Awardなど数々の賞を受賞し、現在ではファインアートとデザインの垣根を超えた若手アーティストとしてウォールストリート・ジャーナルで紹介されるなどアメリカで注目されています。本展は、カーツ氏を日本で紹介する初めての展覧会となり、愛知県立芸術大学に約1ヶ月間滞在して制作した作品を含む彫刻および家具を約10点を展示します。

展覧会名の“アロンジェ Allongé”とは、フランス語で「引き伸ばす」ことを意味するクラシックバレエ用語です。それは腕を外に向けて手を伸ばし指先のずっと向こうに意識を持っていくという意味が込められたポーズのことです。森や植物からイメージする軽やかで飛翔感のある彫刻を制作しているカーツ氏と、登山の経験から山の雄大さやそのスケール感を彫刻に凝縮させている柄澤氏と、構造体を用いて身体の周りの空間と、その彼方に広がる水平線や地平線とを繋ぐ作品を制作している村尾氏。3名の作品に共通することが彫刻のアロンジェです。それはすなわち彫刻の物理的限界を超えた領域に言及し、その力を彫刻に体現させることです。

柄澤健介
2016年 金沢美術工芸大学大学院博士後期課程満期退学。
名古屋市在住、愛知県立旭丘高等学校教諭。
